Flat Stanley Project

Dear Parents,
The Flat Stanley Project is going to be presented during the week of January 14. Please be prepared to present on the 14th. We will just take the students in turn. Thank you.

Here is a copy of the original handout. Please do not stress over this. I just wanted the student to share a personal experience about a different culture/place. Also, students are to share a culture which they are less familiar with. I am currently out of town and have limited service, but I will do my best to answer any questions via email. I have zero phone service. I hope this helps!

Flat Stanley Project

First Assignment:

The purpose of this project is to connect our lives with other lives around the globe. This can be anywhere from another State, city or country! Your job is to choose someone from another place, different from your own, who will be willing to take your Flat Stanley on a picture tour of their location. The goal is for Flat Stanley to be introduced to these new locations and share them with you. This will be done through the receiver taking pictures of Stanley with important monuments/places from their location. Then, the receiver will tell what each place is and why it is significant. The sender (student) will write a letter to the person they want to learn more from. In the letter they will write why they chose the person, what you hope to learn, and a little about yourself. You will mail your Stanley to the sender or send a digital copy via email. The person will take pictures with Stanley, and reply with a letter describing their location and information. These pictures and newly gained information will be shared with the class once it is completed. This place needs to be a unique place that has never been visited/or rarely visited.
You may choose your location. Our class will record on a map where each of their Flat Stanley's have been sent to.

Second Assignment:
Over Christmas break, you will take your Flat Stanley to a place you are visiting/spending time/a place of significance, and take pictures with him. Then, you will present the pictures to the class when we return. These places will be recorded on map as well to show the different adventures. Examples of places to take him could be:
1. A Farm
2. A city
3. A play
4. The mountains
5. The beach
6. The Zoo
We will be making Flat Stanley in class.

Newsletter Week 16 12/3-12/7

Reminders:

Please be getting your child's outfit together for the Christmas performance! You can find it in the BDS newsletter.

January Lunch forms are due the morning of December 12! As always, the sooner the better. :)

As you are well aware, there is a lot of sickness going around our classroom and the school. I can't tell you how much we appreciate you getting your child well before sending them to school. As stated in the BDS newsletter, your child should be symptom and fever free for 24 hours before sending them to school. By waiting the 24 hours you are ensuring that your child is truly well and that he/she is no longer contagious to any others. Since October 31, we have had 1 day in which our whole class has been at school! We do so many fun, active learning projects that I wish everyone could be a part of it. Please help us get everyone well by following the 24 hour rule. I think everyone's immune system is pretty weak at this point, and we could use all the help we can get. I try to advocate continuous hand washing, spraying Lysol and cloroxing the tables. Also, if your child has been sick, or needs to miss due to illness, please call/email/text me! I want to do everything I can to make sure your child stays caught up and misses as little as possible. Even if you have a question about the work on how to teach it, I would love to explain it to you either in person or over the phone. Please know I want to help the best way I can. Thank you for working with us to get everyone well. I can't thank you enough.

THANK YOU JENNIE ANTINNES!! Jennie has GREATLY helped out with our new math unit on Multiplication! She brought the entire class beans, pasta and styrofoam  cups to use as manipulatives to help the students to master the understanding of multiplication. They have been a wonderful tool.

Homework Folders

Dear Parents,
We have made some exciting changes in the classroom! One of the results in the changes is the way unpacking and packing up are carried out. There are no longer specific "Keep" and "Return" papers organized in their homework folders. Instead, you will have to organize your child's folder. The folder should be checked daily and all papers should be taken out. The only papers which should be returned to school in the folders are:
  • Homework assignments
  • Forms from BDS (field trip forms, script orders, book orders, lunch forms….)
  • Signed and Return Papers

Please be checking your child's folder each day. We will be sending home work done in class to involve you in their learning process. Thank you for working with us to make our classroom a productive and positive environment!

Weather Reports/Updates for Hurricane Isaac

Dear Parents,
Kelly Oliver sent out an email regarding the weather situation. BDS is going to follow the Lamar County Plan of Action regarding the storm. If they [Lamar County School District] have early dismissal, late arrival or school closings, we will also do the same. The website to check is: http://www.lamar.k12.ms.us. It will say what is going on at the top of the page, directly beneath the website title. I hope this helps with any questions you may have and I hope we all stay safe.
-Mary Katherine

Week 3 Newsletter 8/27-8/31

Newsletter Week 3 8/27-8/31

Math: WIth the placement tests completed, we are going to start Unit 1 of the Grade 3 curriculum covering ordinal numbers, place value and operations of numbers with up to 6 digits. Once I have the tests assessed and analyzed, I will then alter the lessons to best meet the needs of our class. While challenging our students and pushing them to their full potential is a strong desire, I believe it is vital that the fundamental elements have been mastered in math education. If it appears that there are weaknesses and gaps, we will take time to review/learn the information from 2nd grade math while simultaneously pushing forward in stronger areas. I will send out an email letting you know how your child did on the placement test along with a few pieces of information that might benefit his or her needs. Afterwards, if you still have any questions, please feel free to set up a meeting. I would love to answer any questions that you may have.

Reading: We will finish reading Summer of the Sea Serpent and take our chapter test over the book at the end of the week.

Language Arts:  We will be discussing and exploring Verbs, Helping Verbs and Modal Verbs this week.  Our phonics emphasis for the week is on -aw-.

Online Math Flashcards In Class and At Home

We all need to be working on perfecting our math facts. Please spend at least 5 minutes daily practicing your math facts. We will be working on these in class as well. It is crucial for these basic facts to be mastered in order to successfully move on to higher math skills.

Newsletter Week 2 8/20-24

This Week:
In Math, we are going to be finishing up our blitz review in math. The kids have worked really hard and I am very proud of them. On Thursday and Friday, they are going to be taking the 2nd grade placement test to see where they range. I'm trying to stay true to the BDS standard of teaching students so they are ahead, not behind. Hopefully after the tests I will do a month long review of 2nd grade math and then begin on the third grade curriculum. I have noticed a weakness in the students' basic math skills; simple addition and subtraction. Practicing flash cards will be a great way of improving these skills.
For Language Arts we will have a new set of Vocabulary and Spelling Words. Spelling pretests are given on Wednesday. Students who make a 100 hundred on their pretest will not have to take the spelling test on Friday. Sentence Dictation is where I read the sentence and students write the sentences.
     Spelling words and sentences:

little
rain
mail
place
years
wait
paint
paid
history
services
With a little work and a little paint, the place will look new.
I had to wait in the rain, so the mail got wet.
Vocabulary

bobbed- to go up and down
  •   anxiously- nervous, not patient, worried about something
periscope- a mirrored telescope that allows you to look above your head without having to stick your head up.
woven- a cloth formed by weaving; material that has been braided together in a fashion to create an object like a dress
concerned- to worry about someone or something
gales- very strong winds
torpedo- an underwater rocket
murky- cloudy, not clear
pulse- to thump in a rhythm
quivers- body shakes of fear

Also, we are going to be learning about Nouns this week and continue learning about journaling, writing and penmanship.

In reading we will continue reading Summer of the Sea Serpent and doing our Literature Circles.

For Science we will be learning about endangered species and extinct species. We will be incorporating different activities which coincide with it.
